England have called up Brydon Carse to their World Cup squad in India, with Joe Root claiming the seamer could inherit Liam Plunkett’s mantle as master of the middle overs grabpay
Struggling England lost their leading wicket-taker during Saturday’s record-breaking defeat by South Africa, when Reece Topley fractured his left index finger fielding off his own bowling grabpay
Head coach Matthew Mott initially suggested there was no guarantee another seamer would be brought in as his replacement, inviting the likes of Jason Roy, Will Jacks, Liam Dawson and Rehan Ahmed into the conversation, but Carse’s selection maintains the status quo grabpay
The 28-year-old was the next seamer in line and may have made a stronger push for the original 15-man squad had he not suffered injury issues of his own over the summer grabpay
He was ultimately overtaken by Surrey’s Gus Atkinson, but will now link up with the group in Bengaluru grabpay
Thursday’s game against Sri Lanka will probably come too soon for Carse, who has taken 14 wickets in 12 ODIs to date, but with questions surrounding a team that has lost three out of their first four games he will hope to push hard for a chance grabpay
England have never quite found their heir to Plunkett, the 2019 World Cup winner who nailed a tricky role through the middle of the innings, and Root believes Carse could carry that baton grabpay
“Brydon is a brilliant all-round package grabpay
He scores some handy runs for you, is very dynamic in the field and he’s got a unique wicket-taking ability,” said Root grabpay
“He’s got that Ben Stokes element to him where you sometimes feel like nothing is happening and then he’ll pick up wickets, almost in a ‘Junior Plunkett’ kind of way grabpay
He’s very similar grabpay
”Plunkett was often undervalued for his role in England’s white-ball revolution but played a crucial role in the 2019 final and was the only squad member to enjoy a 100 per cent record at the tournament grabpay
“Pudsey (Plunkett) won’t like me saying this, but he’s almost got more to offer with the bat,” Root continued grabpay
“He’s probably not got as much to offer in the dressing-room just yet, but he’s a big personality too and a great character to have around, so he’s a good addition grabpay
Whenever someone comes in and they’re excited, and you can see it on their face straightaway, a smile is infectious isn’t it?“It can bring the best out of everyone and having that come into the group can’t be a bad thing for sure grabpay

Cody Gakpo could return for Liverpool when they face Toulouse in a Europa League clash on Thursday night grabpay
The Dutch forward has been missing since suffering a knee injury in the 2-1 defeat to Tottenham at the end of last month, but after returning to training in the build-up to the 2-0 derby win over Everton at the weekend, Gakpo is now available for selection, Jurgen Klopp has said grabpay
Andy Robertson, meanwhile, has undergone surgery on the shoulder he injured while on international duty with Scotland, but faces a longer road to recovery grabpay
“Robbo had surgery and all went well, as good as it could be, so the recovery starts after he wakes up,” Klopp said grabpay
“I think it happened this morning grabpay
That’s it grabpay
We don’t know how long it will take or whatever, but the first step is done, that’s good grabpay
“Cody is in full training now since Sunday, which means he is available for the squad grabpay
Whatever we do with that we will have to see, but that’s good as well grabpay
”Klopp hinted at making changes for the visit of Toulouse, but with the game an opportunity to open up a commanding lead in Group E, Klopp does not want to take anything for granted grabpay
“Toulouse deserve all our respect,” he said grabpay
“It is a really interesting story, winning the (French) Cup last year…it was a massive thing grabpay
They are a young team, a talented team, you see them playing really nice grabpay football and they have a clear idea grabpay
“They got a point against PSG and it was a massive one so we have to make sure we are really ready grabpay
Then it is about us grabpay
We have to create an atmosphere through the way we play grabpay
“I’m pretty sure they are looking forward to playing at Anfield as players and coaches, but we have to make sure they cannot enjoy it grabpay
”Cody Gakpo looks set to return to the Liverpool line-up (Peter Byrne/PA) (PA Wire)Liverpool would go five points clear in the group with a win and put one foot in the knock-out stages, and with that in mind Klopp said he would be careful in not making too many changes that might disrupt his side grabpay
“We want to win grabpay football games and this is the next opportunity,” he said grabpay
“(A win) would bring us to nine points with Toulouse on four, but knowing that changes nothing grabpay
We have to play our best grabpay
We will make a few changes but not too much grabpay
“The boys have shown they are really ready for the competition grabpay
That’s what I wanted to see grabpay
We hope to go a long, long, long way in this competition, but for that we have to make all the decisive steps and tomorrow is another big one grabpay
”Curtis Jones will hope to get another opportunity in midfield, having played only once – in the Europa League win over Union St Gilloise – since his controversial red card at Tottenham brought a three-match Premier League ban grabpay
Jones was sent off for going over the top of the ball to catch Yves Bissmouma, but the replays made the incident look worse than it perhaps was grabpay
“It’s been tough,” the 22-year-old said of his enforced time out grabpay
“I was at a point where I was playing games and doing well and then a small mistake like that stops the run of games grabpay
That’s in the past now and I’ve moved on, and I’ve got a chance now to play again so I’m excited grabpay
“In terms of the tackle itself, I’ve seen it at the end of the game grabpay
It was unfortunate but then I’ve seen what the ref was shown, he was only shown the clip of my foot on the leg so I understand (the decision) grabpay
I’ve moved past that and I’m excited for the next games grabpay
